Application of constant force spring in medical equipment

A support device for assisting a patient is used to assist the movement of a patient at the patient support device. In the prior art, a caregiver would operate a patient lift or motor by guiding the lift to raise or lower the patient at the patient support. Such manipulations often require the precise manipulation of heavy forceps and motors by a paramedic to help the patient move around the patient support.

The support means may incorporate a constant force spring design, the support structure comprising a base and an upper portion extending upwardly from the base. The constant force spring assembly may include a carrier slidably coupled to the base secured to a first end of the carrier. The base may include channels that guide sliding movement of the carrier relative to the base of the support structure. The constant force spring assembly may also include a spool and a motor configured to drive the spool. The auxiliary belt may be secured to the spool so that the auxiliary belt is wound and unwound from the spool in response to a motor driving the spool. And the motor can be fixed to the carrier to move with the carrier.

Constant force springs get their name because their motion force is constantly applied. The load is determined by the width and thickness of the material and the diameter of the coil. The tightly wound rollers work in a linear motion, not obeying Hooke’s law (F=kX), but constantly generating forces as they deflect. These springs provide a smooth range of motion and constant load when extended or retracted. Constant force springs can be mounted in a variety of ways and can be partially or fully extended, and can be used in a range of applications since there are no restrictions on extension speed and acceleration.

Constant force springs are an excellent device for applications that require a constant load. The many advantages of constant force springs make them suitable for a variety of applications. The space requirement of the spring itself is minimal, so it provides a smooth range of motion. Since there is no inertia to overcome, constant force springs are very versatile and can be installed onto existing hardware and create a balancing effect. Constant force springs are widely used in the medical and healthcare industries to improve surgical equipment.
