What are the factors that cause premature spring damage ?

According to the informal statistics, the cycle life of high-quality springs can reach more than ten years or even longer under normal use. If the spring quality is not qualified, or there are some improper actions during using process, it may make the springs become premature useless. Then, let’s take a look at the factors that cause the premature failure of the spring.

  1. Exceeding the specified temperature. When the springs used in a high temperature which is more exceed the specified temperature, thespring’s elasticity would be decreased or fade away.
  2. The quality level is wrong, or ordinary springs are wrongly used as high-quality springs accidentally or deliberately, which leads to the feeling that the elasticity is not enough.
  3. The standard selection is unreasonable. Selecting the lighter load type springs base on the low priceand it could not carry the heavier load, which leads to the feeling that the elasticity is not enough.
  4. Ignoring the size of the wire cross-sectional area and pitchwhen choosing the springs but only pay attention to parameters such as outer diameter, inner diameter, and length, which leads to insufficient elasticity.
  5. The material of the springsis too soft, or the spring quenching temperature is too low, or the holding time is not long enough, or the tempering temperature after the spring formed is too high, or the time is too long, all the factors can cause the tensile and compression strength to resist but the elasticity is not enough, this is the real elasticity insufficient.

The Spring Force Constant: Understanding the Basics
The Spring Force Constant: Understanding the Basics

Time:2023-5-30

Springs are widely used in many mechanical systems, from small toys to heavy machinery. The force exerted by a spring depends on its physical properties, such as its length, diameter, number of coils, and material. To quantify this force, we use the spring force constant, also known as the spring stiffness. The spring force constant is defined as the force...
