The power source of clockwork toy — constant torque spring

source:Qianye Precision time:2022-9-14

Clockwork toys are not new to children, and children are also very interested in clockwork toys, because clockwork toys will walk around, or go straight or circle, which is very funny. This kind of toy design has lasted for decades. There are many kinds of clockwork toys, mainly cars and animals. They are suitable for children aged 3 to 12.

Clockwork toy is the general name of motor toys with clockwork as power device. Spring is a kind of spring machine. In the spring, there is a recyclable coil spring. The principle is similar to that of a gyroscope. When the spring rotates, the coil spring inside is wrapped tightly. In short, it is to accumulate power potential energy, and then the spring returns, which naturally produces power potential energy.

The clockwork toy uses a constant torque spring, which is made of stainless steel. The external force reverses the spring from the natural shape to the output wheel (energy storage). When the external force is removed, the spring will return to the natural state and generate constant torque on the output wheel, so it is called constant torque spring. Compared with the power spring, the constant torque spring has the advantage that the torque will not change due to the increase of the number of turns, and there is no limit on the number of turns available. The constant torque spring is mostly used in the design of multiple turns. The number of invalid turns is less, more energy can be stored and the efficiency is higher.

When the spring is full, its torque is the largest, so the front end of the spring needs to be output with less force. After running for a period of time, the spring tightly coiled on the spring shaft will slowly loosen and its energy will decrease. When the energy is about to be exhausted, the torque at the end of the spring is the smallest, and the output force becomes smaller. Therefore, the transmission force needs to be increased to maintain the movement. Therefore, the constant torque spring is very suitable for clockwork toys.
